Description:

(BATTLE OF ANTIETAM LOSSES) GRIFFIN A. STEDMAN, JR.
GRIFFIN A. STEDMAN, JR. (1838-1864) Commanded the 11th Conn. Infantry, was wounded at Antietam, and thereafter killed in action on Aug. 4, 1864 during the Siege of Petersburg. A fine war-date partly-printed D.S., 2pp. large folio (22.5 in. x 18 in.). Newport News, March 3, 1863. The regimental return for the entire 11th Connecticut Vols, showing their overwhelming losses at Antietam and bearing at conclusion the rare signature of Stedman who, ironically, was one of the many wounded at the battle! The whereabouts of each soldier – including field officers – is listed and indicates that 577 men were present for duty at the time. Approximately 23 enlisted men, including their lieutenant colonel William Moegling, are listed as casualties of the bloody battle to capture Burnside's Bridge in their attempt to turn the Confederate flank. The manuscript portion of the document gives a very detailed outline of the regiment's losses reading, in small part: ‘…Co. D…G. Brown wounded & on furlough…Co. E….Harter, Benton, Hall, Smith…in…Antietam Hospital. Md. Sept. 17, 1862…Co. F…Smith detailed ambulance corps…Oct. 18, 1862…Kimball in hospital Washington D.C. Sept. 17, 62…Co. G…Jno. Murray wounded in battle Antietam Sept. 17…', and so forth. GRIFFIN A. STEDMAN, JR. Folds exhibit considerable splitting, resulting in fragility. In need of proper conservation and should be viewed.
