Description:

BASIL DUKE
(1838-1916) Confederate brigadier general who fought with his brother-in-law, John Hunt Morgan, in all of Morgan's campaigns, including the raid into Indiana and Ohio, in which both were captured. Duke was exchanged in 1864 and returned to the Kentucky cavalry that Fall, serving in southwest Virginia, and on Morgan's death was promoted brigadier, taking over Morgan's cavalry. War-date A.L.S. ‘B. W. Duke Brig Genl', 2pp. 4to., ‘Head Quarters Calv'y Forces E. Tenn', Nov. 27, 1864, to Assistant Adjutant General J. S. Landford, in part: ‘…I failed to dispatch the Major Genl commdg yesterday, as nothing deserving his attention…occurred. Nor have I anything especial of importance to communicate…The enemy has not shown the least disposition to advance, and have had but one scout on this side of the Plains...The scout of 10 or 12 men only came up in sight of New Market, and spied on my videttes from the distance of ¾ of a mile. The enemy doubtless had been informed of my move from New Market…it having been reported to me on yesterday morning that the enemy's pickets were standing 3 ½ miles this side of the Plains. I sent Major Toole with a sufficient force, instructed, that if they were picketing this side, to drive them across the river. His report…was that he wait within a few…yards of the Bridge, and found no picket….except two on this end of the Bridge and two on College Hill, which he ran in, and they never had a picket on this side since we left there. I have positive information now, I think, that only the 10th Michigan Regt is at the Plains, numbering about 300, and the rest of their forces are at the Fair Grounds…I become more firmly convinced every day, that the enemy does not design an advance at least for some time…'. Duke's predictions would prove false, for just three days after this letter the Battle of Franklin commenced, costing some 6,000 Confederate lives. Weakened folds, otherwise very good. Worthy of further research.
