748. JOHN BARRY (1745-1803) Revolutionary War naval officer considered the "Father of the American Navy", he commanded the warship Lexington in 1776, capturing the first British vessel in the war. Later, Barry led volunteers and directed artillery at Trenton. Rare partly-printed D.S. "John Barry Capt", 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but likely war-date], an unaccomplished certificate indicating that the bearer, late of a certain vessel under his command: "...is entitled to whatever share or portion of prize-money may accrue to him..." Boldly signed, very fine. Matted with an engraving. $700-900
