Description:

(FRANCESCO BARACCA) (1888-1918) Italian WWI and commander of the 91a Squadriglia, who scored 34 kills before being shot down himself. 14" x 10" b/w, a superb image of Baracca standing beside his fighter, inscribed underneath by his father Count Enrico Baracca to Italian aviator Cesare Sabelli during Sabelli's famous 1934 reception in Italy, signing "Enrico e Paola Baracca" at right. It was Countess Paola who famously suggested to race car driver Enzo Ferrari he use Baracca's prancing horse emblem on his race cars for good luck, and the rest is automotive history. The Baraccas owned a scuderia (or "stud farm") in Lugo and Francesco, a champion cavaliere chose the horse emblem from the crest of his original cavalry regiment. Fine condition. Not examined out of frame. $150-$200
