Description:

Lot of three press photographs of Adolf Hitler, each 5 x 7 in. b/w, all credited to the studio of Heinrich Hoffmann. Two images have been stamped 'GESPERRT' ('BLOCKED') on the verso, meaning it was not to be distributed nor published, the third bearing similar wording: 'NUR AUS BELEG!' These are unflattering or embarrassing images: One shows Hitler in earlier days wearing shorts, another shows him examining a map while wearing reading glasses, the third shows him speaking with Von Papen with a sprout of his hair at the back of his head sticking upwards. According to our consignor, these photos were discovered at the courthouse in Nuremberg during the construction of the courtroom, by his father ROBERT G. STEPHENS, JR. (1913-2003). Stephens served on the staff of Robert H. Jackson, the U.S. Supreme Court Justice that served as the chief prosecutor for the United States during the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. Stephens had lived in Germany prior to the outbreak of the war, and later served in the O.S.S. under William J. Donovan. All bear file holes at one edge, some bear marginal ink notes identifying the individuals pictured, one image has a chipped corner.
