BANK ROBBERIES IN TEXAS AT THE HEIGHT OF THE GOLD RUSH
A mysterious A.L.S. of one ‘S. Rusk', 1p. 4to., Washington, May 14, 1848, to the president of the National Bank of Chester County, William Darlington, in reference to Texas bank robberies. In part: ‘…I hasten to reply to your letter…The Matamoros & Galveston letters in relation to the Bank robbery placed in my hands…were mailed…under cover to Recorder Lee in Phila at his request before he left, and enclosing a letter from me in which I gave him the result of my inquiries upon the subject. I trust they were duly received…I answered a letter from Mr. Dillingham, advising him that I had sent the papers you desire to Mr. Lee…'. Rusk's correspondent, William Darlington (1792-1863) was a physician and botanist turned politician, serving as a Member of Congress for four years. At the time of this letter, Darlington was director of the Bank of Chester County and the Texas incidents no doubted concerned him greatly. Very good.
