Description:

('BAND OF BROTHERS' 506TH P.I.R.) LT. ROBERT E. HALEY'S 'LAKE JUMP' AND AUSTRIA R&R PHOTOGRAPHS (14)
Good grouping of 14 original photographs from the personal photo album of Capt. ROBERT E. HALEY, Co. E, 506th P.I.R., taken by Haley and others as the the company was on leave in Austria after war's end. On July 4, 1945, paratroopers from the 506th conducted a celebratory jump into Lake Zell (Zeller See) in Austria. This demonstration jump took place near Zell am See, where the 506th was stationed following the German surrender and after Colonel Robert Sink established his headquarters at the Grand Hotel by Lake Zalamazay. One of the photos, 5 x 7 in., shows men descending towards the waters of the lake with a flare's trail into the water visible as well. The balance of the photos show the men at rest, including Haley on a raft being pulled by a boat, men sailing, dining, scenic views, etc. With an additional five commercial images of an unknown city. Very good. ROBERT E. HALEY (1919-2004) American military officer in the 101st Airborne Division, a well-rounded student and athlete from Connecticut who served first with the 541st P.I.R., then more famously as 506 P.I.R. Headquarters platoon leader, company commander, and executive officer from late June, 1944 to August, 1945 during which he participated in the Operation Market Garden jump, Bastogne, and many other significant engagements of that famous regiment. He remained with the 506th, transferred to Co. E in July, 1945, until June, 1947.
