Description:

('BAND OF BROTHERS' 506TH P.I.R.) LT. ROBERT E. HALEY'S MARKET GARDEN PARACHUTE RELIC
ROBERT E. HALEY (1919-2004) American military officer in the 101st Airborne Division, a well-rounded student and athlete from Connecticut who served first with the 541st P.I.R., then more famously as 506 P.I.R. Headquarters platoon leader, company commander, and executive officer from late June, 1944 to August, 1945 during which he participated in the Operation Market Garden jump, Bastogne, and many other significant engagements of that famous regiment. He remained with the 506th, transferred to Co. E in July, 1945, until June, 1947. A fine military relic, a section of the parachute from which Haley was suspended as he floated to earth during his jump with the 506th PIR on Sep. 17, 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden. According to his son, Haley quickly cut this nylon camouflage parachute souvenir immediately after his landing. The remnant measures 23 x 44 in. at its extreme edges, and one edge is simply hemmed indicating it was taken from the apex vent. Some scattered pulls and a few tiny holes, else very good. SOLD WITH: a war-date document signed by Haley, 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], a request that funds be withheld from his monthly pay and instead be sent to a family member, signed in blank. Fine. Obtained directly from Haley's family who kept his lockers since his passing. With supporting documentation from Haley's records.
