Description:

Scarce printed ballot, 5 1/2" x 9 3/4", asking the German voting public to approve the merging of the offices of Chancellor and President following the death of Paul von Hindenburg, in a referendum held on August 19, 1934. The ballot reprints the text of the "Law on the Head of State of the German Reich", passed by the Reichstag on Aug. 1, and asks the voters to approve the resolution with the language: "...'The office of the President of the Reich is unified with the office of the Chancellor. Consequently all former powers of the President of the Reich are demised to the Führer and Chancellor of the Reich Adolf Hitler. He himself nominates his substitute'... Do you, German man and German woman, approve of this regulation provided by this Law?..." Contrary to other ballots commonly encountered from the period of Hitler's seizure of power, the circles for "Ja" and "Nein" are of equal size. The ballot has not been completed, and shows original folds and two spots of faint soiling, else very good to fine. The resolution was passed by a wide margin, thanks to the voter suppression and ballot forging efforts of the NSDAP, to the effect that in certain regions, the final number of "yes" votes was greater than the number of eligible voters.
