1850. BABE RUTH'S 60TH HOME RUN (GEORGE HERMAN "BABE" RUTH) (1895-1948) Legendary American baseball star and Hall of Famer who hit 60 homer runs in 1927 and had a career total of 714. Scarce newspaper reporting Babe Ruth's landmark 60th home run, printed within The Minneapolis Journal, Oct. 1, 1927, 14pp. folio, with the story printed on page 9, first column. The headline, which runs the width of the paper, reads: "SIX YEAR EFFORT BRINGS RUTH RECORD OF 60" adding beneath: "Season is Ending Successfully For Yankee Swatter Not Until 1919 Did Babe Blossom Into Home Run Hitter-Has Walloped 416 Circuits". The story continues: "...In the next to last game of the Yanks in the American League season Babe produces number 60 yesterday , establishing a new record for home runs in a single season...Zachary of the Senators had the distinction of hurling the ball that made the dream come true. It happened in the eighth inning with one strike and one ball...Colonel Ruppert paid more than $1,000 for each home run as the idol of the baseball fans rates $70,000 per year...". The article then sets forth Ruth's home runs stats for previous years, including those with the Red Sox. The paper is brittle at edges with a few small chips not affecting text, else very good. It would not be until 1961 before fellow Yankee Roger Maris would break the Babe's record. $300-400
