Description:

AVIATION IN NEW YORK
A fine archive of material from the files of Ken Behr, manager of both Floyd Bennett air field and LaGuardia Airport in New York in the Twenties and Thirties. 21 1/2" x 23" 1940 blueprint of Floyd Bennett Field signed by Commissioner of Docks John McKenzie showing the various strips at the field, flight limitations by horsepower over and under 100 HP, and the 14 rules for use of the facility. Also included is a small quantity of correspondence, about 15 letters and copies, concerning acceptance of the rules (proposed by Behr), Behr's appointment, and operational matters. Five items concern the commissioning of the U.S. Naval Air Station at Floyd Bennett, June 2, 1941, including two tickets, map, etc. Also present is a ca. 1943 application in blank for airline operators to apply for space at the newly constructed Idlewild Airport (later JFK) in which applicants details their needs for space. Two 12 1/2" sq. maps, included, show the location of seaplane ramps and airports in New York ca. 1935. Finally, there is a large 20" x 14" spiral bound publication: New York City's Future in the Air, 54pp., issued by American Airlines in 1943. The publication was the airlines' attempt to convince the city to construct additional airports and use tangent runways vs. parallel runways. Essentially, there would be a central terminal with runways emanating from gates much like spokes on a bicycle wheel. This extremely detailed and diagrammed proposal was made during the planning of Idlewild Airport (JFK) and was obviously never adopted. Very good.
