[ Autographs ] WILLIAM IV (1765 - 1837) King of England who resisted a halt to the slave trade, and was the last king to attempt to force a Prime Minister on Parliament. Fine and intriguing content partial AL.S. signed in text "Lord High Admiral", 2pp. 4to., Bushy House, Sept.29, 1828 marked "Private and Confidential" to a fellow naval officer regarding his removal from his post by then Prime Minster Arthur Wessley, the Duke of Wellington: "...however flattered I must be with any mark of approbation from my brother officers I wish to decline what may be considered an interference on the part of the military then [mutiny?] to declare their sentiments politically. The situation of Lord High Admiral is both civil and military and in between may have been the motives that induced the Duke of Wellington to make my resignation necessary. I do not think the officers of His Majesty's Navy to be right in thus expressing any opinion and the more so [?] because it my decided intention to take no part [?] in politics myselfand therefore I should regard the more that my brother officers to whom I wish so well shall [?] desire offering their regard for me be lead into any measure that must be considered by the Government as a censure on them. The other part of your letter respecting the means resorted to and the reasons for my removal from office does and does not surprise me. At the same time I shall certainly be anxious to learn the particulars and the manner you received your information..."It appears from the context of this letter that certain officers in the navy did not approve of Wellington's actions and planned some sortof action on the future King's behalf. Together with a partial 1p. A.LS. "William" 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.] possibly concerning the construction of a ship. Uneven left margin with some minor loss to text, otherwise very good. Two pieces.
