[ Autographs ] William F. "Baldy" Smith 1824-1903 Union major general who led at First Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, and was instrument al in the "Cracker Line" operations at Chattanooga. Good content A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Philadelphia, Jan. 6, 1893 to Mr. Ropes. Smith advises that he has prepared battle maps for inclusion in a book, including the Wilderness, the lines at Petersburg, and Forts 5, 6, 7 and 8 he adds: '...I will make out the roster of [Benjamin] Butler Army or at least all that is necessary for my purposes..."
