[ Autographs ] WHO IS THE REAL HERO OF SARATOGA? An interesting broadside, 1p. folio, [n.p., ca. 1818] entitled "Who is the HERO of SARATOGA...General DEARBORN or BROOKS?" criticizing Massachusetts Gov. John Brooks who campaigned for office on the merits of his exploits at the battle of Saratoga against another significant participant at that battle, General Henry Dearborn. The broadside, filled with testimonials from various Dearborn supporters, quotes the official report of Gen. Horatio Gates to Congress commending Dearborn for his bravery at the battle and notes that Gates did not even mention Brooksin his report. The polemic continues, noting Brook's participation in the Federalist Hartford Convention of 1814 which was perceived by critics as a conspiracy against the Union at a time when it was facingthe onslaught of Great Britain. A great piece of political propaganda!Light uneven toning, a few minor tears repaired on verso, otherwise very good condition.
