Interesting content A.L.S. on Senate letterhead 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 12, [1917] to a lady assuring her not to:"...worry about the `overt' act. Sometimes war develops without it. Sometimes the fates revolve and settle the trend of events. I note themotor options extend to April, and I assume you do not plan any serious endeavors until that time. If your son has developed the trials to a point where he is ready to write final judgment I shall beglad to furnish him letters of introduction which ought to secure him a hearing. You may command me at any time..." At the time of this letter, the Senate had just adjourned allowing Wilson's Armed Ship Bill to die without a vote. On March 12, however, Wilson announced that he had the authority to arm merchant vessels without congressional authority and issued the order. Four more American merchantmen would be sunk before Wilson asked Congress to declare war on April 2, 1917. It is unclear what the woman's son was developing atthe time. Usual folds with pin hole affecting one letter in text, otherwise very good to fine condition.
