[ Autographs ] VARINA H. DAVIS Newsy A.L.S. "V. Jefferson Davis" 4pp.8vo., [New York, ca. Dec. 23, 1902], to M. K. Corning, in part: "...Iwrite with you in appreciation of the `manchild born' into the world, and in your gratification that Mrs. Clarence is moderately well after the enormous strain of her boy's birth. The mothers with whom I alwayshave been in most sympathy to the meek maiden -- St. Joseph must have been a silent grave-looker, and if he welcomed the holy child before the wise men and shepherds came, it would not have been with a father's overwhelming tenderness, and I have never seen a religious enthusiasm which equaled the parental instinct of man...My grandchild Jefferson Hayes Davis is with me now and I wonder, when he shows his pretty little teeth and leans his head on my shoulder, how I can be glad without him when he returns to school...I am going up to the Euclid to dine with Mr. Davis' grandniece and her children at Christmas so Jeff can have her boys to amuse himself with on that day..". Fine.
