[ Autographs ] Union Soldier's Letter Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., Baton Rouge, Dec. 18, 1862 H. A. Dean writes friends, in part: "...we expect the enemy will attack us... [we] steamed up the river past several encampments of Gen. Butler's army... we saw some large plantations of sugar cane... [rebels] left several horses behind them ...the gunboat Essex threw several shells over the town to keep them on the move... a large drove of niggers came in all day yesterday ...sometimes 20 or 30in a drove... part of the city was burned when the battle was fought... mowed down the rebels like grass... state house looks as though it has seen some balls..."
