[ Autographs ] Union Soldier's Letter Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to. Port Hudson, Jun. 7, 1863, in pencil. Sylvester Kimball, Co. H 6th Mi. writes his wife of the first assault on Port Hudson. In part:'...we made a charge on the fort May the 27th at 2 O'clock and [fought] till dark but had to fall back... tha' fell all around me...Stephen Baley had his leg taken off below his knee and I heard today that he has died... 15 wounded in our company... the captain, I don'texpect he will be with us any more, he had a grape shot in the side. We had a hard fite you better believe..." A strong content letter from a critical campaign.
