[ Autographs ] Union Soldier's Letter Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., Atlanta, July 23, 1864 Bruce Elmore writes his wife, in part: '..We left our battleground of the 20th... in pursuit of the Rebels...we passed two lines of their works, one of them very strong and well built... [we] now lay within a little less than three miles of Atlanta ... commenced throwing up breastworks in sight of the enemies works and not more than double rifle shot from them... they threw shell at us...heavy fighting on the left of our army... Rebels attacked our forces and tried to drive our lines, but were repulsed...Gen Mcpherson who commanded our forces at the point of attack is reported killed..." More good content!
