[ Autographs ] Union Soldier's Letter Good content Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., New Bern, Aug. 5, 1863 Sam Putnam of the 25th Mass writes: "...just returned from a 40 mile march to Winston ... captured about 50 niggers and 60 horses, also cotton, tobacco and carriages... 2,000 cavalry from Suffolk made a raid from Winston up to Weldon and tried to reach the Weldon Bridge but failed... this Weldon Bridge is made of iron and we ought to destroy it or hold it as it is very important..." Putnam also mentions Grant's paroling of captured Confederates, adding his opinion that the word honor is unknown in the South, fever caused by poor drinking water, etc. Very good.
