[ Autographs ] Union Soldier's Letter Fine content Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., "Camp near Richmond, Va.", Aug. 4,1862 William C. Ward of the 115th Pa. Vols. writes a friend: "...Rebels crept up to aplace on the other side of the river, directly opposite the camps of this army and planted batteries, and at midnight commenced such a firing that you would have thought that the whole army was engaged...[we] let go at a furious rate, one large siege gun in front ofMcClellan's quarters let go [Parrot guns] did the same... we killed (and buried the next day) 17 Rebels, besides capturing 3 field pieces ... one horse had the whole back bone torn out by a solid shot... [one man] had a 24 lb. shot to pass across his tent, and tear all the canvase off... these internal niggers... they live on the U.S. Government and do nothing but eat, drink and are very merry... these lazy whelps war has been turned from its original purpose to a war on slavery If I had my way with these niggers I would put them into somebuilding, and then blow it up with gunpowder... " More remarkable content. Fine condition, easily read.
