Description:

[ Autographs ] ULYSSES S. GRANT A most important D.S. as President, 1p folio, Washington, Apr. 26, 1875, being Grant's appointment of Edwards Pierrepont to serve in his cabinet as Attorney General of the United States. Despite being a lifelong Democrat, Pierrepont was a strong supporter of Grant and received his appointment following his tenure as a U.S. district attorney in New York. As Attorney General, Pierrepont prosecuted some of those closest to Grant in his scandal- ridden administration. Most notable was his prosecution of the "whiskey ring", a conspiracy of hundreds of distillers and government employees to divert millions in liquor taxes into their own pockets. Even Orville Babcock, Grant's personal secretary, was indicted but saved through Grant's intervention. All in all, 110 conspirators were convicted. Co-signed by HAMILTON FISH as Secretary of State. Fold separations mended on verso with archival tape, a 2" tape stain at lower-right, well away from text, otherwise this historic document isin very good condition.
