[ Autographs ] ULYSSES S. GRANT (1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President ofthe United States and Union Lieutenant General. War-date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Pittsburg, Tenn., Apr. 11, 1862, written from near Shiloh just four days after the monumental battle of Shiloh. Grant writes to A. Sinclair Flaudrian in New York, in full: "Sir: Yours of the 25th of March inquiring for the address of Capt. Edgar is just received. Capt.Edgar is not now serving within the Military District commanded by me.I do not know his address nor any one who does. Respectfully, U. S. Grant Maj. Gen.". Light toning, mounted to a slightly larger sheet with a portrait of Grant affixed in blank area at lower left which could easily be removed by a conservator. Very good and rare from this early in the war.
