[ Autographs ] THEODORUS BAILEY (1805 - 1877) Union naval commander and Farragut's second in command at New Orleans, he later captured over 150 blockade runners. Fine content A.L.S. "T. Bailey" 3pp. 4to., Callow Harbour, May 12, 1854, to his brother N. P. Bailey about domestic and international affairs. In part: "...The Commodore in the frigate St. Lawrence sailed from this post on the 12th of Feby. last, leaving me to look out for the interest of the U.S. in Peru and especially to supply our minister Mr. Clay in his efforts to settle the claims for indemnity for various insults and outrages committed bythe Officials of this Government on American Citizens...the instructions of Mr. Marcy to Mr. Clay have been weak and temporising - so different from his high toned and energetic course in the Smyrna affair...If Mr. Marcy would make up his mind what indemnity he requires of this Government...then the whole thing may be settled at once...We hear that Emperor Nicholas with admirable foresight has spread other large frigates in the Pacific, ready at the first sound of the war trumpet to pounce on British and French commerce spreading destruction on every side...". Neatly written on onion skin paper, marginal tears at bottom, else very good, and deserving of further research.
