Description:

[ Autographs ] Stephen R. Mallory 1813-1873 Confederate Secretary ofthe Navy. Good content A.L.S. as Senator, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Feb.5, 1852 to President Fillmore (whose name he misspells!) concerning the case of Lt. Richard W. Meade, brother of Union Major General George G. Meade. Meade has resigned due to an insult by a higher officer, but seeks to retract his decision. In part: '...he has long been known to several members of the Committee and to myself for fifteen years, and he has ever been regarded as a gallant and honorable man... will regard the restoration of Mr. Meade to the service to which his life has been honorably devoted..." Ironic, as Meade remained in the naval service long enough to command vessels firing on Mallory's C.S.A. Navy! Very good.
