[ Autographs ] STEPHEN DECATUR (1779 - 1820) American naval officer whose warship United States defeated the British Macedonian in the War of 1812, later he led a squadron to Algeria to force a peace on American terms. Decatur is also well remembered for his toast: "...ourcountry right or wrong!". Good content L.S. "Stephen Decatur Jr."1p. 4to., "United States Ship Congress", January 1, 1804, to Lieutenant John Pripp on the condition of the ship, in part: "...Being informed that the middle stay sail is unfit for use, you will with another Lieut. undo the sailing master and examine the same and Report to me in writing the state in which you find it...". Folds, some browning and light dampstains, otherwise good.
