Description:

[ Autographs ] SLAVE AUCTION DESCRIPTION An interesting collection offive small diaries, about 100pp. total 8vo., in pencil, written by anabolitionist minister in Charleston, S.C., from August of 1841 to May of 1842, with several references to the institution of slavery, including a visit aboard the infamous slave ship Amistad, and watchinga slave auction. In part: "...Jan. 29, 1842...went on board the schooner Son, formerly called the Amistad ... Feb. 5, 1842 ... Stoppeda few minutes at an auction of negroes. They all appeared sad. I neverbefore was present at a sale of human beings. Was deeply struck with [the] slight regard paid to the dearest interests of these unhappy people. What do those who engage in this traffick think of a day of retribution? Can they believe that they must then give an account for the deeds of life..." Additional content includes a description of visiting a cotton gin and a Charleston synagogue, and comments on Southern horse racing. Extremely clean, all very good to fine.
