[ Autographs ] Samuel Cooper 1798-1876 Confederate major general andthe highest ranking officer in the C.S.A., he served as Inspector General in Richmond throughout the war and fled with Jefferson Davis when the capitol fell. Manuscript D.S., 2pp. 4to., War Department, Washington, Dec. 11, 1836 Headed "Special Order No. 160", the document orders Bvt. Col. Trumbull to relieve First Lt. (and later C.S.A. Major General) W. H. C. Whiting, Corps of Engineers, at the CapeFear lighthouse. some soiling, with a small ink blot touching one letter of signature, still a fine association.
