Henry Smith with special thanks for your thoughtful kindness in permitting me to see it. It is a great satisfaction such words from that quarter...". Just three months before our letter, Hayes' wife Lucy had passed away, and Ms. Lamb had written a touching article about her. With a postscript additionally signed "H."
