[ Autographs ] Robert Morris 1734-1806 Signer of the Declaration of Independence, financier and politician. Morris was instrumental in the financing of Washington's armies, and later financially ruined through his speculation in western lands. Financial content A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Philadelphia, July 27, 1786 to Robert Gilmor. In part: '..the Invoice of the lot[?] will be examined & if found right passed toyour credit. I shall this day deliver to Messrs. Mordecai Lewis Billspayable in London for [British pounds] 1,588.9.5... I wish you could charter a vessel to carry off the tob[acc]o of your purchase, Mr. Donnell's ship will be long in fitting out... Carey & Tilgman will beConstant purchasers, but as to the news from France, those that put much reliance in it may have cause to regret..." Slight show through on a few lines with three or four letters showing a touch of erosion,as many of Morris' letters do, otherwise very good.
