[ Autographs ] ROBERT E. LEE (1807 - 1870) Confederate General and commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, arguably the most brilliant commander of field armies in American history. S.P., a fine carte-de-visite photo of Lee in military uniform, a famous image takenby the noted Richmond photographers C. E. Jones and Vanerson in 1864, beautifully signed on the image and again on the verso, presented to one of his cousins, Annie Lee Payton. The tax stamp indicates that theimage was purchased in 1865 or 1866, and was probably signed almost immediately after the end of the war. The image is boldly signed on the front, and the inscription on the verso, also boldly penned, reads "For my cousin Annie Lee Peyton, R. E. Lee". An exceptionally clean presentation image of Lee, indeed one of the best we have had the privilege to carry, in fine condition.
