Description:

[ Autographs ] RICHARD H. ANDERSON (1821 - 1879) Confederate lieutenant general present during the bombardment of Fort Sumter, later commanding Charleston's defenses. Rare, very late war-date A.E.S removed from a document, reading in full: "Respectfully forwarded approved R. H. Anderson Maj. Gen. Comdg" Apr. 7/[18]65". This endorsement was signed only two days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and only one day after Anderson's forces were destroyed atSaylers Creek. This could very well be Anderson's last endorsement as major general -- he was relived of command the very next day! Two marginal stains, one affecting the last two letters of the signature, typical soiling and wear, overall good to very good.
