[ Autographs ] (PRO-SLAVERY BROADSIDE) Rare and very desirable pro- slavery broadside, 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], clearly war-date and likely from a border state]. The broadside is headed "SLAVERY AND TRUTH" and sets forth religious and political excuses for the institution. It reads in part: "...[slavery] is a providential condition of society, recognized and regulated by the Holy Scriptures,and as such to be tolerated by Christian people...according to the course pursued by Christ and his Apostles...each State has a perfect right to tolerate or repudiate at pleasure. Any interference...is a breach of covenant between the parties, which every Christian patriot and every citizen should deplore...". Very slight dampstaining and toning, otherwise very good.
