[ Autographs ] PINKERTON AGENCY SPY REPORT ON TENNESSEE AND KENTUCKY A most unusual unsigned manuscript, 6pp. 4to., Headquarters of the Army, Washington, D.C., Jan.31, 1862, marked "Extract", apparently an intelligence report prepared by the Pinkerton Detective Agency. At this point in the war, McClellan, then head of the Army of the Potomac depended on Pinkerton's reports for assessing the strength of the Confederate Army. Unfortunately, Pinkerton's assessments wildly exaggerated the strength of the Southern forces. This document is entirely composed of accounts of operatives in the field and is very detailed, of which we can only offer a small sample: "...the 10th Jan.at Abington, operative saw a part of Floyd and Wise's commands, a cavalry Regt. about 700, including 2 pieces of artillery manned...en route for Richmond from Western Va...cavalry was armed principally with breach loading rifles made in Baltimore, also each with Colt's revolvers, navy size, and several with heavy, large shotguns... artillery 2-6 pounders...to guard the railroads and check the uprisingof Union men one Co. of infantry was stationed at Jonesboro, Tenn. twocompanies of Inf. and two pieces light artillery at Greenville, One Co Infantry at Russellsville, Tenn., and another at Mossy Creek...At Nashville are two regiments Infantry...no bridges guarded between Bowling Green and Nashville...operative with horse and buggy...visitedthe 1st Arkansas...on the way out, counted 38 regiments of Infantry, including those at Bowling Green, saw seven field batteries...clothingof the troops at and about Bowling Green is poor and wearing out... Eight Texas Rangers rode into Bowling Green. The Arms used by that force were large, buckshot, double-barreled guns, and Colt's navy revolvers. Not over Sixty Regiments...at Bowling Green, in the opinionof my operative...". This is the first intelligence report of this nature we have offered, and we assume such reports are rare. Very goodto fine.
