Sheridan's fighting prowess was evident throughout the war, from Booneville to Chickamauga and the elimination of J.E.B. Stuart at Yellow Tavern. Force 1824-1899 In part: "...I beg your pardon a thousand times for the delay in answering your invitation...I can't see how it escaped me. I cannot go over to the meeting of theCommandry, at Cincinnati as I have long ago accepted for the [WilliamT] Sherman [birthday] dinner on Feb. 8th. Strong & Loomis are both absent. Wishing a happy occasion..." Sherman would die just two weeksafter his birthday celebration. Fine.
