[ Autographs ] (Peter Zenger) 1697-1746 American printer and journalist, the central figure in a seditious libel trial (1735-35 in which he and h anti-administration newspaper, the New York Weekly Journal were acquitted. his famous trial is regarded as setting the precedent for the establishment of freedom of the press. Exceeding rare copy of his newspaper, the New-York Weekly Journal, 4pp. 4to., June 24, 1734 Just five months before his arrest, Zenger issued this paper with a front page attack, in part: "...I find Mr. Bradfords Writers are not contented to asperse the Character of People in this Province, but extend their Endeavours beyond the Sea... This I supposeis to insinuate to the World, That his Majesty has thought fair to employ a Person whose great Age renders him unfit for that Station..."Other news includes military action around Danzig, an announcement of the marriage of King George II's daughter signed in type by the King, naval movements, and local news.
