[ Autographs ] Paul J. Semmes 1815-1863 Confederate brigadier generalwho commanded a brigade at Seven Pines and in the Seven Days, defended Marye's Height at Fredericksburg, and was killed at the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. Rare A.Ms. (unsigned), 3pp. sm. folio, "Hd. Qrs. Vol' [n.p.], July 3, 1853 Semmes writes orders for a July 4th military parade, in part: "'..A National Salute of 31 guns will be Fired ...[for] the independence of the U.S. of America... each pvt. [draws] 12 rounds of blank cartridges..." On two pages Semmes seems to design uniform insignia, and makes additional notes concerning the upcoming parade. These two pages have some lines drawn across by Semmes, first page not affected. Semmes is a scarce autograph in any form.
