[ Autographs ] NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST (1821 - 1877) Confederate lieutenant general of Tennessee cavalry and arguably the greatest cavalry officer in history, he raided and harassed Union forces and supply lines with great effect throughout the war. Rare good politicalcontent A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Montgomery, Alabama, Jan. 12, 1870, complaining about Reconstruction Republican committeemen allying against the interests of his railroad. In part: "...I have been here in attendance on the Legislature for the last two weeks intending to get my charters through to Brunswick and to arrange for the Endorsements of my [?]...A county [committee] was raised by some of the extreme Republicans to examine my Road and it was their intention to report against it, but when they examined it they could find no faults in the road...they have had me considerable exercising over thematter for seven days...today the committee reported in favor of the Road in such strong terms as will help me in freeing[?] markets...I have here at Montgomery about 200 white men and 500 negroe men and laying [track] down as fast as possible. Expect to reach Altoona in 18months...am now using...thirty thousand dollars a month..." Forrest's foray into railroads failed miserably some time thereafter. Fine condition.
