[ Autographs ] (Mohawk Indians) Teyoninhokarawen Mohawk Indian Chief A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Portsmouth, Aug. 21, 1805 to Rev. John Owen of the British and Foreign Bible Society. In part: "..Just going to sail... My heart shall ever glow with the gratitude for the many favors I have received from my very much to be esteemed English friends. May the Almighty preserve you all in my sincere prayer..." The Mohawks allied themselves with the British during the Revolutionary war, and following war's end many converted to Christianity and some, such as Joseph Brant, traveled to England on fund-raising missions. With transmittal cover in his hand. One fold split near bottom, owner's notation at top, overall good condition.
