[ Autographs ] Lyman Abbott (1835 1922) American clergyman and abolitionist who teamed with Henry Ward Beecher in the editorial roomand the pulpit. Fine content T.L.S. 1p. 8vo. on The Outlook letterhead New York, Feb. 14, 1898 On Valentine's day, Abbott counsels a man onresisting temptation. In part: '...when a man finds himself under thepower of any temptation or any sin he should avail himself of every aid in order to secure deliverance... In the case of intemperance onegreat aid is a personal pledge to some friend in whom the tempted hasconfidence... 'Abbott adds his idea of a suitable pledge, adding: "...I do not think all drinking of alcoholic liquors is wrong... if a manfinds himself injured or imperiled, he should at once adopt... total abstinence... " Toned at two margins, otherwise very good.
