[ Autographs ] LUTHER MARTIN (1748 - 1826) American lawyer and patriot, Martin was a member of the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention. He opposed a strong central government and the adoption of the Constitution, and later defended Burr in his trialfor treason. A.L.S. 1 p. 4to., Baltimore, Aug.12, 1818, to Robert Wilson, the cashier of the Bank of Maryland, in part: "...it was only as I was going into court that I was informed by young gentleman... whom I accidentally met that this was the morning when my renewed notemust be sent in. You will receive it therefore with the discount whichI fortunately happen to have about me...". Soiling, some uneven toning mounting strip on address leaf on verso, good to very good.
