[ Autographs ] LUTHER MARTIN (1748 - 1826) American lawyer and patriot, Martin was a member of the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention. He opposed a strong central government and the adoption of the Constitution, and later defended Burr in his trialfor treason. A.L.S. 1 p. 4to., Baltimore, Aug.12, 1818, to Robert Wilson, the cashier of the Bank of Maryland, in part: "...it was only as I was going into court that I was informed by young gentleman... whom I accidentally met that this was the morning when my renewed notemust be sent in.
