[ Autographs ] Lorenzo Thomas A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Washington, D.C., Mar. 1, 1869 Thomas writes to President Andrew Johnson's private secretary, in part: "...I arrived yesterday and find myself retired. Ihave yet... to collect and arrange my data and make my annual report for Congress. I think I should be placed on duty with my full pay & allowances while this work is completed. Will you please forward. thecase to the President, and request for me such an order. I know his time is now fully occupied.." Thomas had been an ardent supporter of Johnson and an opponent of Stanton during the impeachment proceedingsof the president, and was retired, presumably by Stanton, ten days before Johnson left office. A three inch section of the letter was torn, possibly during opening, and carefully repaired on verso. Signature not affected.
