[ Autographs ] Libby Prison Letter Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., Libby Prison, Richmond, Va., Sep. 30, 1863 First Sergt. Benjamin F. Blair of the 121st Ohio writes a friend following his learning of the death of his brother at Chicamauga: "...I rejoice that I am soon to have the promised photograph... my heart is nevertheless full of grief I have learned of my poor brother's fate sooner than I expected He was killed on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the fight. hewas shot through the body, and as I understand it, he died instantly.My informant, Major Macdonald, arrived here a prisoner last evening. he saw John fall but was unable to go to him... Alas that one so noble, so earnest, and so true should have met such an untimely fate.. I have a letter from him dated the 6th, only 13 days before his death. I... shall preserve it religiously...' Letters from Libby Prison, particularly with content, are quite rare. With transmittal envelope, stamp removed.
