[ Autographs ] Joseph Whitworth 1803-1887 English engineer and inventor who devised the hexagonal gun bore and developed a new type of ductile steel used in the cannons named after him and widely used by the Confederates during the Civil War. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Manchester Jan. 25, 1863, marked "Private", to a captain mentioning his meeting with the Duke of Somerset and forwarding a letter. Mounted, sold witha label of the Dilworth Rifle Company' Two pieces.
