[ Autographs ] JOSEPH WHEELER (1836 - 1906) Confederate major general "Fighting Joe" was a brilliant cavalry officer who raided Rosecrans at Chattanooga and harassed Sherman's army through Georgia and the Carolinas. Fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Brooklyn, July 14, 1904 to his daughters in which Wheeler praises his comrade and fellow cavalry general, Nathan Bedford Forrest. In part: "...I have always been careful to never speak of Gen. Forrest except in the highest terms of praise. He and his friends felt it keenly when I was made a Major Gen.just after the battle of Murfreesboro and his friends sought to criticize me..." With holograph envelope. Wheeler's forces were heavily engaged at Murfreesboro, circling the Union forces, skirmishing, and capturing wagons and supplies. Fine.
