[ Autographs ] Joseph R. Hawley 1826-1905 Union major general who led his men at Bull Run, Port Royal, and at Richmond and Petersburg. Fine content A.L.S. on Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Jan. 25, 1884 concerning the case of Union Major General Fitz John Porter who had only recently regained some of his rights following Pope's unjust accusation of Porter's failure in the face of fire. In part: "..subsequent information in the matter of which Pope and Porter had aknowledge - is of little or no weight in the attempt to absolve Fitz John Porter from a charge of disobedience. And you might add that in cannot relieve him from a charge of failing to use that sort of discretion implied in... march to the sound of the enemy's guns'...'
