[ Autographs ] Joseph Hooker 1814-1879 Union major general who commanded the Army of the Potomac in its defeat at the hands of Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville. War date A.L.S. "Joseph Hooker", 3pp. 8vo., "Lookout [Mountain], Feb. 26, 1864 to Rev. I B. Fox. Good content with Hooker mentioning a correspondence between himself and Secretary of war Stanton. he adds: "...I was not aware until a few days since of your many adventures after leaving me for Chattanooga. You must know that I provided you with the best turn outI had which you will say is not very complimentary to our stock of animals. Constant use & an insufficiency of food did the business forthe most of our animals. I have no doubt but those two unfortunate mules are both in their graves... I could have furnished you with a less stupid orderly... Consider it a part of army life... Me thinks the story of Lookout will not be complete without the incidents in which you were the hero I am now having a painting made of this landscape... ' With Hooker's copy of the Stanton correspondence in which he seeks relief for the 2nd Mass. Fine.
