[ Autographs ] Joseph Holt 1807-1894 Union Judge Advocate General able to suspend habeus corpus, tried Fitz John Porter and the Lincolnassassins. Fine content war-date A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo. on patriotic letterhead, Washington, Sep. 25, 1861 to President Abraham Lincoln. Holt recommends future Union Brigadier General Albin F. Schoepf for acommand. In part: "...I submit... the enclosed note of Gen'l [Winfield] Scott, in reference to Mr. Schoepf, the Hungarian officer of whom I had the honor of speaking to you last evening ... [He] has seen much service in command in Hungary & in Turkey. he is very gifted intellectually, & ardent in his loyalty to his adopted countryhe would be able to recruit & organize a brigade in a few weeks I have entire confidence in his success... " Holt's letter worked; fivedays later Schoepf was commissioned as brigadier general and served Lincoln and the nation with distinction.
