Description:

[ Autographs ] Joseph E. Johnston 1807-1891 Confederate major general who led armies at Bull Run and Seven Pines. Johnston is perhaps best remembered for his stubborn defense of Atlanta and his resistance to Sherman's March to the Sea. Interesting content A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Washington, Jan. 4, 1891 to a close friend he calls "Amigo Mio". In part: "...I was delighted yesterday to have my recollection of your handwriting refreshed having had an interval of three months to forget it... I'll add the R.S.V.P ofa dinner invitation which reminds me of a note from Gen I [Daniel] Butterfield informing that 'his friend' the Comte de Paris proposes sending me his photograph - framed. I shall be very glad to see your friends the Carters again. They shall know where to find the whiskey - after testing it in my house... ' Very light offsetting, otherwise very good.
